Minorities and Women Section Awards 

The section is calling for nominations for section awards to be presented at the Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Please see below for information pertaining to each award. Please send section award nominations to Chair, Dr. Jaya Davis at jbdavis@uta. For student travel awards, please send the nominations to Co-Chairs, Dr. Jason M. Williams at williamsjas@mail.montclair.edu  and Dr. Heather Alaniz at Alananiz@uhcl.edu by November 30, 2018.

Coramae Richey Mann Leadership Award 

To be considered for the highest honor of the Section, Coramae Richey Mann Leadership Award, a person must meet the following criteria: an active Member in good standing of the Section for at least 2 consecutive years prior to being recommended. Recipient must be a contributor to the ethnic and racial diversity in criminal justice education. The recipient must endeavor to advance critical thinking concerning women and must have made substantial contributions to the emerging body of knowledge about gender issues in criminology and criminal justice. 

Becky Tatum Excellence Award

To be considered for the Becky Tatum Excellence Award, a person must be an active member in good standing of the Section. The recipient must be committed to conceptual or empirical contributions to the study of minorities as victims, professionals in criminal justice, or offenders.

Evelyn Gilbert Unsung Hero Award 

The recipient must be an active Member in good standing of the Section for at least 2 consecutive years prior to being recommended. Must be committed to ethnic and racial diversity in criminal justice education. The recipient must have made substantial contributions to the emerging body of knowledge about gender issues in criminology and criminal justice. 

Roslyn Muraskin Student Travel Award

This award is designed to encourage the participation of undergraduate and/or master's women students in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and will permit one student to attend and make presentations at the 2018 ACJS Annual Meeting. The award will be a maximum of $600. Recipients shall be required to submit receipts to receive reimbursement for their expenses.
To be eligible for an award, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
  1. Be a female student in the criminal justice/criminology discipline.
  2. Be enrolled in an undergraduate program of criminal justice/criminology during some part of the academic year for the annual meeting at which the presentation will be made; or
  3. Be enrolled in a master’s degree program of criminal justice/criminology during some part of the academic year for the annual meeting at which the presentation will be made. 

Esther Madriz Student Travel Award

​One student award designed to encourage the participation of undergraduate and master's level racial/ethnic minority and women students in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and will permit one student to attend and make presentations at the 2018 ACJS Annual Meeting. The award will be a maximum of $600.  The recipient shall be required to submit receipts to receive reimbursement for their expenses.
To be eligible for an award, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
 
  1. Be an ethnic minority (male or female) in the criminal justice/criminology discipline.
  2. Be enrolled in an undergraduate program of criminal justice/criminology during some part of the academic year for the annual meeting at which the presentation will be made; or
  3. Be enrolled in a master's degree program of criminal justice/criminology during some part of the academic year for the annual meeting at which the presentation will be made. 

Applicants for either the Esther Madriz or the Roslyn Muraskin Award must submit each of the following:
  1. Letter of Application
  2. Personal Resume
  3. Official Transcript of degree being pursued at the time of submitting the application
  4. Faculty Letter of Nomination
  5. Original single authored manuscript (4 paper copies). The presentation may be a roundtable, or a research paper session. The paper should not exceed twenty typewritten double-spaced pages using APA format. Each paper will be blindly reviewed by a national committee.
